FINE ART GALLERYPAINTINGVAAL MARINA, SOUTH AFRICA

Van den Berg Fine Art Gallery.

Colour has a structure.
A rhythm. A life of its own.

Van den Berg Fine Art Gallery, by the Vaal Dam in South Africa, is the home of the paintings of Riaan van den Berg: bold gestures, considered structure and richly layered colour, shaped by a lifetime of music.

With Cloudly Culture, the gallery opened A Life in Colour, an online exhibition that lets visitors anywhere step into the work.

01 / THE ARTIST

A painter. A pianist.
An explorer.

For Riaan van den Berg, a painting begins with a feeling. A classical pianist and lifelong educator, he finds a natural connection between musical composition and abstract painting; classical music, the shapes of nature and the energy of a brushstroke all find their way onto the canvas.

He spent close to three decades leading Art and Culture with Music at North West University in Potchefstroom. His path has included lectures at the University of Edinburgh, fine arts studies in Salzburg, work alongside Dirk Meerkotter at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 1993, and a solo exhibition in Warsaw in 2013.

03 / WHY IT MATTERS

Music. Movement.
A lifetime of looking.

Riaan van den Berg’s work shows how one discipline can inform another: proportion and rhythm learned at the piano become structure and movement on the canvas. His paintings are made to live with architecture, and many are seen at their best on the scale of a room.

An independent gallery that keeps an artist’s work, story and voice together is rare. It offers a South African perspective that deserves an international audience.

04 / WORKING TOGETHER

An exhibition
built like a visit.

Cloudly Culture created A Life in Colour as a curated journey through the work, in thirteen chapters, with an exhibition viewer, a narrated guide and an original piano loop. Visitors can follow the tour or explore on their own, choosing at each work whether to listen or read.
